Welcome to the HTML page of Studio Erik Stehmann. You are probably watching this website from a mobile device, or at least something that won't play Flash movies. I recommend you to also watch my website from a desktop pc or mac. (it's supposed to be nice)

Being innovative, at the moment, seems to be only possible by making things complicated, using all the latest high-tech techniques. But I try to be innovative by naïvely re-exploring basic techniques and materials, to find exceptions to what we know and believe. Design doesn’t need to be complicated to surprise people. I’m not the kind of designer that needs a far-fetched concept to come to ideas. I’m an impulsive designer, experimenting with materials I collected in the last few years, and dreaming of the materials I still need to explore. Techniques can be a great inspiration, or sometimes even a stupid joke or sentence can start me to re-think about things.

Since my graduation from the ArtEZ Acadamy of Arts in 2009, I've been busy setting up my designstudio in Arnhem (The Netherlands), where I work on creating new designs, commissioned projects, and setting up the production of my designs.

BLOCKS COLLECTION     2011

Inspired by the typical ‘woodworker’ sentence: “Glue is stronger than wood”, I experimented with glue and wood to test this phrase. After testing lots of different types and brands of glue I discovered a glue that succeeded. By cutting a beam up in blocks, and gluing it together as a beam again, it became even stronger than the original beam.

:O CHAIR     2011

The most common chair in the world is the standard cantine/office chair. :O Chair is a concept to change the way we look at these seemingly boring chairs, and to transform them into something more fun in an instant.

'DOG' SCRATCHPOST FOR CATS     2011

When you like design and love cats, you need to have a scratchpost to save your furniture. As a cat owner myself, I faced the problem of not being able to find a pretty scratchpost, to fit in my interior, so I decided to design one. And with dogs being the absolute enemy of cats, I thought it would be nice to see a cat being boss for once.

INFLATING LIGHTS     2009

With the Inflating Lights, the goal was to create a light that would actually do more than just give light. The Inflating Lights puff and breathe like living things. The light from the light bulb itself causes this reaction by shining onto tiny photovoltaics that are used to power ventilators; when you turn on the light, the shade inflates with air. Turn it off, and it sags and deflates.

PAPER PUPS     2009

For a half year, I started off each morning making one puppy, with that day’s newspaper, to transform all negative news to one positive object.

STUFFED FURNITURE     2009 (AND 2011)

A range of interior products created by approaching furniture as stuffed animals. The collection consists of cotton shapes filled with pourable soft foam that reach their final form by the expansion of the foam. Each piece is unique, because this process is uncontrollable, and it creates its own wrinkles and dents.
